Stage 3

Stage 3

English

In Years 5-6 extension activities include: Public Speaking, Debating, Gifted and Talented groupings, University English, Writing and Spelling Competitions. The school is committed to an accelerated literacy approach and is steadily training teachers in Reading to Learn, with University of Sydney Professor David Rose.
We are very proud of the results of our students’ achievements across a range of assessments. Students are regularly benchmarked by their teachers to ascertain strengths, weaknesses and their reading level.
Support programs include;

  • Support Teacher Learning
  • Teachers' aides for individual and small group support
  • Buddy reading
  • Community and parent volunteers
  • Home reading reward schemes

The use of Interactive Whiteboards in all Stage Three classrooms complements the development of literacy in a challenging and motivating manner.

Mathematics

The individual strands of the NSW Maths syllabus are taught and Stage Three children at Mudgee Public School are involved in the following maths activities.
Students are continually assessed for their strengths and weaknesses. All levels of maths are catered for as additional Support learning teachers and aides are employed to reduce group sizes and focus on the needs of students. Reduced class sizes in mathematics enhance enrichment opportunities for those students who are capable mathematicians.
The Primary maths program is supported by a text book which complements the explicit and systematic teaching of mathematics.
Students are encouraged to participate in state wide competitions.
Our strong partnership with Mudgee High School sees Stage Three students benefit from lessons with visiting Stage Four teachers and resources.

P.S.S.A. Sport

Mudgee Public School is part of the Primary Schools Sports Association and we compete against schools in the Cudgegong Zone.
Children who are interested in trialling for a number of different sports have the opportunity to be selected into our school sporting teams to compete in the PSSA competition or other carnivals or events which arise. These sports include; basketball, cricket, soccer, tennis, softball, netball, rugby union and rugby league.
Mudgee Public School fields competitive and enthusiastic teams in all these codes every year. Parent assistance is welcome.

These include:
• A.F.L.- Paul Kelly Cup .
• Cricket- CLC Seven a Side competition.
• A.R.L. -Touch Football Gala Day.

From time to time the school is approached by various sporting codes to run clinics with the children. If appropriate within the school program this is allowed to occur.
Non swimmers and weak swimmers are invited to participate in two weeks of daily swimming lessons in December with trained instructors from the staff and community.

Creative and Practical Arts

Art is a visual language through which aspects of our world can be understood. Our program comprises the processes of making and appreciating artworks and images so students are encouraged to perceive, respond, manipulate, organise and appreciate.

Artwork completed by students in Stage Three is on constant exhibition so students are able to see the development of skills with greater immediacy. Their work is displayed in classrooms, and general areas of the School. Students’ work is exhibited in community art exhibitions and competitions and the Mudgee Show.
Students with a strong interest in Creative and Practical Arts may attend an annual camp at Burrendong with expert personnel from Department of Education and Training and artists within the community.

Music is an enjoyable part of the Stage Three curriculum. Students in Year 5 and 6 who are interested have the opportunity to sing in the Senior Choir and participate in community events and in Eisteddfods. Participation in our School Band is available to all interested students and is mentioned in greater detail elsewhere in this Web site.

In the area of the Dramatic Arts each class is involved in an annual themed performance involving, singing, dance and drama.
