As part of our Creative Arts programs at Mudgee Public School, dance is offered at varying levels.
As a Sport elective - a local dance teacher is employed to teach dance to Sports groups from across the whole school at various times throughout the year. The children learn basic Jazz movements and have opportunities to demonstrate their skills in 'free dance' and small choreographed dance sequences.
As an extra curricular group - at the beginning of each school year, students have the opportunity to audition to be part of a school dance group. In 2015, there were 3 dance groups - from Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. The dance groups perform at the local Eisteddfods as well as special assemblies and concerts within our school community. The dance routines are usually Jazz style with the support of local choreographers from school teachers to ex-students to a local dance teacher. There is usually a small cost for costuming and bus hire to participate in the eisteddfods. The groups rehearse during lunch times once a week mostly during Terms 1 and 2.
The Stage 3 dance group may also be offered the opportunity to participate in the bi-annual MPS Performing Arts tours.
Being part of the MPS dance groups provides opportunities for children who may not for various reasons, be able to experience dance outside of school. Dance is a great way to keep fit, improve co-ordination and increase self-confidence.
2015 Dance Groups Achievements
On Tuesday 9th June all 3 MPS dance groups travelled to Dubbo to perform at the Dubbo Eisteddfod. The stage 2 group were first to compete. They were up against 6 other schools from Dubbo and Narromine with their routine “New York, New York” which was choreographed by the talented Mrs Garnock. The children performed brilliantly and impressed the adjudicator with their great costuming, smiles and team work gaining them a very reputable 3rd place!
Stage 1 were up next with their “Little Red Riding Hood” routine which was choreographed by the clever Miss Felicity Smith, an ex - MPS Captain and currently a year 9 student from Mudgee High School. Although it was a long wait, the children didn’t disappoint! They had wonderful smiles and looked very much the part in their cute costumes – especially the “Big Bad Wolf!” Their timing was great and they remembered the choreography well earning them 2nd place!
Finishing the day was the Stage 3 dance group with their energetic routine “Uptown Funk” which was choreographed by Miss Tanya, a very talented dance teacher who is always extremely generous with her time! Again, the competition was very strong with 6 other groups from Dubbo and Narromine competing with many well-choreographed and highly entertaining routines. Our dancers did an outstanding job, their timing was impeccable, their energy was high and the smiles on their faces said it all! Ending a very successful and fun filled day with a Highly Commended!
Well done to all of the children from all 3 dance groups! A massive thank you to our 3 choreographers for all of your time and effort to help the children develop and rehearse their routines. Also a huge thank you to our bus drivers and helpers on the day – Mrs Endacott, Mrs O’Brien, Mrs Date, Mr Kerr and Mr Thyrd.
