Gifted & Talented
At Mudgee Public School, staff members take the time to get to know you and your child well. This individual attention ensures that all students are supported throughout their schooling. Individual and group programs cater for students’ differing abilities.
Our Gifted and Talented program includes a special class for students in Years 5 and 6 who have been identified as having particular strengths in literacy and numeracy skills. Year 4 students are identified and nominated by their class teacher in Term 4. These selected students then sit several tests and are invited into the class for Years 5 and 6.
Gifted and Talented students participate in the annual Tournament of Minds competition. These children work together on a long term challenge over six weeks and also on a spontaneous challenge on tournament day. We are very proud of our talented students who have achieved Regional First place in Social Sciences for the past two years. They have then represented Western Area at the State Tournament at the University of New South Wales.
Other opportunities for Gifted and Talented students at Mudgee Public include; debating, public speaking, band, choir, dance and PSSA sport. Our debating teams have been zone champions for the past three years and we have had a number of students represent Western area at the State Debating Finals in Sydney. Over the past two years MPS has won both the Junior and Senior Roger Wotton Public Speaking Competition that is contested by all schools in the Cudgegong Learning Community. Our band and dance groups have participated in tours to Sydney and Nelson Bay.
